Building professional networks is a powerful tool. Having one-to-one access to a seasoned PR practitioner is invaluable. That's why the Alabama PRSA chapter developed its Mentor Program. It matches qualified college students with mentors from the Alabama PRSA chapter. The goal is for students to gain insight into the public relations profession and develop marketable skills that will help in their future careers.
To participate in the program students must:
- complete a student enrollment form,
- be a member in good standing of an accredited University's PRSSA chapter,
- be a junior or senior public relations major and
- have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
PRSA members who want to participate as mentors must also complete an application.
Submitted documents and qualifications of both students and mentors are reviewed to make the best match. Mentors guide students for a semester with suggested activities such as resume reviews, mock interviews, and job shadowing.
Mentorship Program Scholarship
A new addition to the Mentorship Program is the creation of the Mentorship Program Scholarship. The award will honor an outstanding student who exhibits dedication and has demonstrated a commitment for pursing a degree and a future career in public relations. The $1,000 scholarship will be presented annually every spring to a Mentorship Program participant. In addition to the mentorship program requirements, qualifications include a letter of recommendation from the student’s mentor and submission of an official college transcript. The deadline to apply is November 16, 2009. Please click here for an application .doc.
